Kathy Galford just learned that she is our region's teacher of the year after Chesapeake's superintendent, administrators and colleagues stopped by her classroom.
“It was such an honor to be chosen, I thought it was over. I just couldn’t believe it because of how many teachers that I know personally and that my kids have had, that I’m chosen to represent all of them. It’s just an honor. I can't believe it,” says Galford.
The Greenbrier Middle School teacher doesn't feel like she's at the top of her class, but says she makes the grade.
"I feel like I’m committed to do the best that I can to become better every day. I'm never satisfied with myself as a teacher, I’m just trying to improve every day,” Galford says.
Her students were also surprised to know their English teacher is now in the running to be Virginia’s teacher of the year.
"It just means the world to me because they are like my children, so it’s like they are proud of their mama means the world."
The state's teacher of the year will be announced on October 12th.
