The poll, taken Tuesday, showed 36% of registered voters indicating they would be less likely to vote for Romney after the tapes were released. Twenty percent said they were more likely to vote for Romney, and 43% said the tapes made no difference.
Among independents, 15% said they were more likely to vote for Romney in November, compared to 29% who were less likely and 53% who said the tapes made no difference.
The poll was taken Tuesday, as the tapes were picked apart by media outlets and pundits. They were first released Monday night on the website of the liberal magazine Mother Jones.
In the tapes, Romney makes a political prediction based on his view of Obama’s supporters.
“There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney says in one clip. “There are 47% who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing.”
Adding to his argument about entitlement, Romney said his “job is not to worry about those people.”
Romney also discusses, in pessimistic tones, the chances for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
The Gallup survey was taken by telephone from 885 registered voters, and the sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points. Among independents the sampling error was plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.
