A former Camden County teacher has been accused of sex crimes against a child.

According to the News Observer, the alleged victim was a 14-year-old boy.

Samuel Byers is currently a kindergarten teacher at Creech Road Elementary in Wake County.

But he was a teacher in Camden County between December 1999 and June 2000 and that's when police say the sex crimes happened.

He was arrested Wednesday and charged with five counts of felony indecent liberties with a minor and five counts of felony statutory sex offense with a minor.

The News Observer says Byers confided in a friend about the incident and the friend called police.

They were given a photo of the alleged victim and the Camden County Sheriff's Office tracked him down.

According to the paper, the alleged victim admitted he was molested more than a decade ago but was afraid to come forward because he was embarrassed.

Camden County police say they're still investigating and more charges could be expected.
