The head of the Virginia Department of Health has stepped down.
Doctor Karen Remley says it’s due to the new regulations placed on abortion clinics.
Remley says the changes compromise her ability to fulfill her duties.
The attorney general certified the new rules late last month.
They require the state's existing abortion clinics to be regulated like newly constructed hospitals.
Critics say that will put them out of business.
Remley had led the Virginia Department of Health since 2008.
