Officials are now saying that overwash and flooding have closed N.C. 12 in Dare County from south of the Oregon Inlet bridge to Rodanthe.

There are also reports of overwash on N.C. 12 in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk and flooding in Rodanthe.

Additional overwash has been reported at areas further south.  In Hatteras, overwash has been reported at Buxton and north of Hatteras Village.  Flooding has also been reported at the village of Ocracoke.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are assessing damage, but deteriorating conditions are making it difficult to determine the extent of the damage and how quickly the road may reopen. There is a high likelihood that more water and sand will be upon the road during the evening hours, especially at high tide.

Most ferry operations are suspended as Hurricane Sandy approaches.  By 8 p.m. last night, the NCDOT’s Ferry Division had suspended all ferry operations as conditions deteriorated.  This morning, the Southport-Fort Fisher route resumed normal operations.  All other routes remain suspended until conditions improve.

NCDOT remains on alert and ready to activate emergency operations as needed. Operations will return to normal as soon as conditions are deemed safe.  Travelers are encouraged to call each ferry terminal directly with questions about specific ferry routes or schedules.
