Suspect in Newport News hit-and-run turns himself in

Newport News, Va. - According to Newport News police, Clifton Mallicott, 19, of Hemlock Rd in Newport News turned himself in at Police Headquarters around 4:40pm Friday, stating that he had been involved in a traffic crash earlier that day.

Mallicott was interviewed by police and charged with reckless driving and felony hit and run. He was placed in the Newport News City Jail.

Mallicott says he turned himself in after being told about the news coverage of the crash.

The crash happened around 9:15am Friday, in the 500 block of Bland Boulevard near Interstate 64.

Police say a silver four-door Honda ran over the curb, onto the sidewalk, and hit a woman.

The driver got out and spoke to the woman but then he got back in the car and then drove off.

The woman is expected to be OK.
