A Break from The Mentalist

PatrickJane orchestrates an elaborate plan to break Lorelei Martins out of prison in the hopes of her leading him to Red John

I think Dad and I are going to take a break from writing our thoughts on “The Mentalist.” At this point, I’m so frustrated with the show I once loved that I may stop watching it all together. And this week’s episode is what really tipped the scales.

Dad: Oh, not this Red John crap again. I just wish they’d get that over with or something. This is getting ridiculous.

Me: Agreed. I don’t even care who it is anymore, unless it’s someone like Lisbon.

Dad: That would be interesting.

Since Mom and Dad were in town for Thanksgiving, we got to watch this episode together. Here’s how it turned out: Dad fell asleep, Mom was checking Black Friday deals on her phone, and I was trolling through TV Spy. As you can tell, we were all completely enthralled by the mystery of Patrick Jane breaking out Lorelei Martins.

Dad: At least Lisbon is showing some fire, getting smart with Martin’s mom.

Me: I was too distracted by the actress’ bad plastic surgery. Also, what’s with all the weird camera angles?

I did some digging, and apparently Simon Baker, “Patrick Jane,” directed this week’s episode. Others thought it was amazing but for me it was just distracting. The plot line was too easy to follow, too. When we first heard about Martins’ sister being murdered, Mom called Red John as the killer, and of course she was right.

Dad: What a sissy, lying on the ground letting a little girl beat you up.

Me: Jane never has been much of an athlete. I kind of wish she’d kick the crap out of him.

Maybe I am too hard on the show. I know plenty of you out there are still fans and I understand sticking with a show through the rough patches, but I just don’t know anymore. The three of us had no problem stopping the episode so I could catch them up on current events, like the Petraeus affair. That would never happen during “NCIS.” I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
