Security guard shot after taking action in Portsmouth

Posted

A Portsmouth security guard is now out of the hospital after being shot while working in the Phoebus Square complex.  Two security guards took action while trying to help a woman being robbed last weekend. Neighbors believe the guards saved the woman's life.

It happened just before midnight on Saturday when two men wearing all back approached a woman getting out of her car in the Phoebus Square parking lot. Despite a gun being held to the victim's head, both guards tried to catch the culprits.

Portsmouth Police tell us when the would-be robbers ran off, one of them turned around and shot one of the security guards.

"I don't know what it was, but they were desperately trying to get away. You don't know what they're going to do next," said neighbor, Donte Mitchell.

Fortunately, that guard is okay and out of the hospital.

"It's sad to hear, nobody wants to get hurt on the job, just unfortunate but I'm happy he's okay," another neighbor said.

Portsmouth investigators now believe the same suspects tried to rob someone else, only a few blocks from Phoebus Square and just 30 minutes before shooting the security guard.

"He was doing his job, I just don't understand what [in] the world, we've been hearing about crimes here and there all week," said Mitchell.

Folks living nearby tell NewsChannel 3 they've seen more police officers patrolling the area since the shooting last weekend. Still, both suspected robbers remain on the run.
