In the wake of the Connecticut elementary school shooting, elected leaders throughout the country are taking steps to improve the safety of students, and Virginia is no different.
House of Delegates Republican speaker William Howell is calling for more school resource officers in elementary schools.
To do that, he is proposing more funding to a state grant program for resource officers.
"The tragedy in Connecticut is heartbreaking. As the Newtown community begins a healing process that will last longer than we can ever imagine, our thoughts naturally turn to our own children. This is a critical step toward making sure all of our schools are as safe as possible,” says Howell in a release.
Fellow republican Virginia Beach Delegate Ron Villanueva agrees with the idea.
Villanueva says the extra funding is something elected leaders on both sides of the aisle should agree on.
