GUADALAJARA, Mexico — A 9-year-old girl who became pregnant when she was 8 gave birth to a healthy baby in western Mexico.
The baby, a boy, was born via C-section and weighed close to six pounds.
According to Fox News Latino, the birth occurred at a hospital in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on January 27, but became public Wednesday. Local authorities said the father is a 17-year-old who fled when he found out about the pregnancy.
“We want to find the young man who was responsible to know his version, because she (the mother) is not able to understand the significance of their actions,” said the prosecutor in the case, Jorge Villasenor, to Mexican daily Milenio. “This is a case of rape or child sexual abuse.”
Both mother — named Dafne — and child are at home and healthy, said Dr. Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital. They are monitoring the development of the baby closely given his mother’s young age.
According to media reports, the girl and the father briefly knew each other, and the father wanted to move into her house but she refused – so he moved out of town. The prosecutor’s office in the state of Jalisco said they may press charges, and are willing to request cooperation from neighboring state authorities if necessary.
According to ABC News, Dafne is one of 11 children and lives in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, a poor town 25 miles south of Guadalajara.
“Her parents work all day and were not watching after her,” Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, told ABC News. “And therefore didn’t realize what was about to happen.”
About 25 percent of the women who gave birth at that hospital were teenagers.
