Folks are working together raise awareness of the southeast community's history.

The event, called "education beyond the text books" took place this afternoon.

The Norfolk FBI, FBI citizens' academy alumni association and Huntington high school alumni association held the event, specifically to educate people about citizen-sponsored project called "legacy square cultural trail."

it includes twelve blocks -- beginning at 23rd street and extending to 35th street, bordered by Wickham avenue and Orcutt avenue.

Presentations were given to provide background on the significance of buildings located in that area.

During the event they also recognized the first African-American fire chief in Newport News  Larry Orie.

He was chief from 1991 to 2001.
