A pleasant Discover(y): Pantech Discover Review.

So I got my hands on a Pantech Discover and I won’t lie – I wasn’t thrilled with the idea at first.  I wasn’t familiar with the brand, so I had low expectations.   But after two weeks with it, I was pleasantly surprised!  Let’s jump right in.

First thing about the phone – the way if feels.  It has this really interesting back that gives the feel of some extra grip.  It was really nice and made me feel safer when handling the phone.  Another really nice feature, the speaker placement!  Instead of the speaker being on the back of the phone it’s on the sides!  What a concept! That way when I set it down I could still hear the music I was listening to!  This is huge for me because I love to set the phone down on the coffee table and listen to music.  A big “win” in my book!  And the volume of those speakers was excellent.  Usually I have to plug up to a small speaker with my current phone – I didn’t need it.  Another “win” in my book.

As for performance – I was really surprised. It’s snappy and had almost no lag.  But that can change depending on what apps you run and how many of them you run at the same time.  But for me – it was smooth.

Now for the display – again I was surprised.  This isn’t a brand of phone I’ve ever used or heard a lot about, but it was actually nice.  It’s not a Samsung Galaxy S III, but it’s still nice – YouTube videos looked good as did Netflix and HBO Go.

So what didn’t I like?  Well for having a 12MP camera – I was really disappointed.  The pictures from my 5MP Samsung Galaxy Nexus look much better.  The Pantech’s pictures looked very washed out.  Now, after I applied some filters and such – they looked better.  But I don’t want to do a lot of post-picture editing.  I want to just point-and-shot.  This phone just didn’t seem up to par for me.  And I take a lot of pictures and video – so a good camera is important.

This isn’t the best phone out there, but it’s FAR from the worst!  If you’re looking for a nice Android phone and don’t need the best camera out there – the Pantech Discover should be on your list.
