UPDATE: All lanes are now back open on I-64 WB at the HRBT after crews closed them for emergency repairs Monday morning.

Newport News/Hampton, Va. - Crews are now working on a pothole inside of the HRB that was caused by a busted pipe under the roadway according to VDOT.

The right lane has re-opened again, but the left lane remains closed for emergency maintenance. The back up right now is about 8-miles. Drivers are encouraged to use the JRB or the MMMBT as alternate routes.

A nearly 4-foot pothole appeared in the left lane of the HRBT at around 9:22 a.m. Monday morning. All lanes were then shut down. Crews were able to isolate a busted water pipe under the roadway which was part of the fire suppression system.

Crews do not believe the cold weather caused the incident, but they have not yet determined a cause.

The right lane was closed as crews made repairs.

VDOT hopes to be finished before rush hour. They expect to make more repairs over the next two weeks. They have not stated when crews will be starting these repairs.
