Norfolk, Va. - A man is in custody after police say he carjacked a woman on North Center Drive on Wednesday and then tried to carjack another person only two miles away.

The suspect has been identified as Gregg Baird of Monchpongo, Va.

Police say Baird approached a woman and told her to get out of her vehicle. She refused and he threw the woman out of the car and onto the ground which caused minor lacerations.

He then got into the woman's car, police say, and drove off.

Police caught up to Baird and the woman's vehicle about 30 minutes later.

Police say he also knocked on the window of another vehicle and demanded the driver take off their sunshades just minutes after the other incident. Police now say he did not try to take the vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle stayed on the scene.

Baird has now been arrested and charged with one count of robbery/carjacking.

Witnesses described a pretty intense and scary situation in the back parking lot of the Shenandoah Building.

A manager who works in one of the office suites saw it all happen.

"I looked out the window and there was a lady hanging on the back of a vehicle,” says Gary Pope, Jr., a witness.

Gary Pope says he watched a carjacking go down from a second-floor office suite window.

He's the branch manager for bankers located inside.

"She got up off the ground after the vehicle sped off and she was running down the sidewalk,” says Pope.

Norfolk police tell NewsChannel 3 that the carjacking happened a little after 10:20 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Danna Vannostrand and her crew were shooting for an episode of the TV show “Wicked Attractions.”

Vannostrond says they were unloading their truck when a car pulled up in front of them.

"Our location guy walked up to the car and poor girl, she was so distraught and upset she was just trying to use her phone,” says Vannostrond.

She says the woman told them someone tried to carjack her.

“There was a little one in the backseat, I would guess about 4 or 5,” says Vannostrond.

Police continue to investigate this case. Stay with NewsChannel 3 for more updates.
