Hampton, Va. – The Coast Guard assisted a 48-foot sailboat Thursday with four people aboard.

It happened approximately a mile west of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel near Hampton.

A crewmember aboard the sailboat Bright Star contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at approximately 6:30 a.m. reporting the boat taking on water, and the vessel making way into Willoughby Bay.

Crews were dispatched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Little Creek and a 41-foot Utility Boat from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth to assist.

Both boatcrews arrived on scene at approximately 7 a.m. The UTB crew transferred two dewatering pumps and two crewmembers to the sailboat to begin dewatering efforts.

The Coast Guard crew affected repairs to the sailboat and assisted the Bright Star crew in dewatering the vessel.

The UTB crew escorted the sailboat to Willoughby Bay, and the owner is arranging for the vessel to be removed from the water for further repairs next week.
