Update: Power was restored to all affected customers at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dominion Virginia Power says.

Hampton Roads, Va. – A squirrel caused thousands to lose power across the Peninsula Tuesday morning, officials tell NewsChannel 3.

Bonita Harris of Dominion Virginia Power says a squirrel got into some of the company’s equipment, causing damage that knocked out power to over 9,500 customers between Hampton and Newport News in the Warwick and Aberdeen areas.

The Newport News 911 center located in City Hall was never affected. The Newport News Police Department Headquarters automatically switched to generator power during the outage.
