Elizabeth City, N.C. - A lockdown was lifted at Elizabeth City State University just after 1:00 a.m. Friday morning after shots were fired late Thursday night.

University police confirmed to NewsChannel 3 that shortly after 11 p.m. shots were fired near a wooded area on the eastern perimeter of the campus, and the campus was put on lockdown.

In a news release the University Police and the ECSU Office of University Relations and Marketing said the campus was placed on lockdown at 11:08 p.m.

According to the release, all students were told to return to their residence halls.
