Norfolk, Va. - Norview Middle School was evacuated on Tuesday due to a fire that began in a men's room trash can, officials tell NewsChannel 3.
The fire has been put out, according to Norfolk Fire Chief Williamson.
Students were transported from Norview Middle School to Norview High School, and lunch was provided for those who were unable to receive lunch before the evacuation.
Middle school students will be dismissed from the high school at the usual dismissal time, officials say.
Here is a statement from Norfolk Public Schools:
Attention Norview Middle School parents/guardians:
Norview Middle School experienced a small fire and students were evacuated and accounted for and are currently at Norview High School in the stadium. Because the students were evacuated, their backpacks and personal belongings are still in the school building. The building is inaccessible at this time. There is a possibility that your student may not have a cell phone or house key due to the school evacuation. If this is the case for your student, you need to pick up your student from Norview High School at the stadium now or at dismissal.
We plan to have the school open tomorrow. An Edulink phone message will be sent again this evening to parents with an update on the school status.
All after-school activities at Norview Middle School, including Boys/Girls Club, are canceled today.
