Hodges Manor Elementary was placed on temporary lockdown Tuesday afternoon while Portsmouth Police searched for a burglary suspect nearby.

Police say they attempted to make contact with the suspect in the 400 block of Mayflower Road around 11:00 a.m.

As the officer approached the suspect, he ran away and a pursuit was initiated.

The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution due to the close proximity of the search.

The lockdown lasted approximately 45 minutes.

The suspect was ultimately able to elude police.  He is described as a black male in his mid twenties, approximately 6’0 tall, wearing all black clothing.  Residents in the area are asked to call 911 if they observe any suspicious activity in the area.
