Sussex, Va. (WTKR)– Two friends set out to hunt turkey Wednesday but, tragically, only one returned.

Officers from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries began a death investigation which they say appears to have the signs of an accidental fatal shooting.

A report says 70-year-old Raymond Weidner shot his friend 46-year-old Kevin Brooks in the back of the head with a blast from a shotgun.  Brooks died on scene; both men are from Virginia Beach, officials say.

Friends say Brooks had a mantra -- do a good deed every day.

"Many times, we would be heading to a destination and Kevin would force us to pull over and go help that bystander on the side of the street," says friend Antonio Iglecia.

"You hear about those fellas, that people, the good ones always go, he was one of the best," says friend Fred Meyers.

Friends say Brooks had been looking forward to spring turkey season all winter.

"He went over the top with taking precautions. He showed me safety was first and foremost. That was something he instilled from the very beginning," says Iglecia.

His death is unexpected and tragic to so many.

"You have your friends and then you have your best friends. But with Kevin, everybody pretty much was his best friend," says friend Chris Perry.

Iglecia and Perry say Brooks would often make them pause so they could take in the good things life had to offer.

His best friends will never come to grips with how a hunting accident took away the best person in their lives.
