Newport News, Va. – The prestigious “Medal of Valor” Award will be presented at this year’s ceremony honoring an off-duty firefighter who saved the life of his friend on July 25, 2013, fire officials tell NewsChannel 3.

Each year, the Newport News Fire Department recognizes the outstanding performance of nominated firefighter-medics at the Newport News Fire Department’s Annual Recognition Ceremony.

This year, the ceremony will take place on May 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News. A Medal of Merit, Firefighter, and Employee of the Year awards will also be presented.

In addition, members of the community will be receiving awards. Four-year-old Jai’lah Driver, who made a 9-1-1 call for her mother, will be honored – and an apartment maintenance man who pulled a fire victim to safety will be presented with the Good Samaritan Awards.
