Maya Angelou appears in Norfolk to celebrate Botanical Garden’s 75th anniversary

Norfolk, Va. - Poet Maya Angelou was in Norfolk to celebrate Norfolk Botanical Garden's 75th anniversary.

Over 7 decades ago, hundreds of African Americans cleared the land now known as the Botanical Gardens.

Angelou spoke about her push for equal rights and the struggles she had to overcome throughout her career.

The 85-year-old has been awarded several honors, including the presidential medal of arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
