Lawmakers place more restrictions on TANF program

Posted

Today, the Department of Social Services announced that come Monday, Virginians can no longer use welfare money to buy certain items.

Lawmakers amended a part of the law restricting the use of the electronic benefit cards in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

The cards may not be used to buy lotto tickets, alcohol, tobacco or bingo games.

The Commonwealth says people getting benefits should be focused on getting a job and in a better financial situation.
