Folks in the community are taking action for a wounded veteran.

Kendall Wallingford was surprised with a kayak and gear during a potlock held by "Heroes on the Water" at Appomatox River Company in Hampton.

The group helps injured service members relax and rehabilitate by taking them kayak fishing.

The gear is expensive though - and Heroes on the Water is only able to provide equipment during their scheduled outings - so a group of people called the "Coffee Can Club" teamed up with a kayak company to get him equipment of his own.

"What Heroes on the Water has done for me is pretty much allow me to heal, allowed me to really connect with other people, and find new friends, and it's given me a way to calm the storm inside."

At the potluck - Heroes on the Water also showed off a new kayak that they'll have on display at community awareness events.
