Virginia Beach, Va. – Crabs will swarm the beach on Saturday.
The Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge is being held this Saturday, July 27.
The event will be held at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on the beach at 30th Street from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. It’s free for participants and spectators.
Attendees can enter their crabs into a race and a beauty pageant. Contestants must be registered by noon in order to race.
Trophies are handed out to the winners of the race and beauty pageant, as well as to winners in such categories as “Friendliest Crab” and “Biggest Crab”. All participants receive a medal for their attendance.
More than 300 crabs are at the Crab Challenge each year, with many coming from out of state.
Aside from landing in the New York Daily News’ 2012 list of the top ten wackiest festivals in the world, the Mid-Atlantic Crab Challenge was featured on the BBC show “All Over the Place”.
