UPDATE: The victim, Haywood Madison, died at the hospital at 12:03 a.m. as a result of his injuries.
Alcohol was a factor relating to the pedestrian, Suffolk police say. The driver will not face charges.
Suffolk, Va. - A 61-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital after being hit by an SUV when he walked into oncoming traffic in Suffolk.
Police say the accident happened at 8:32 p.m. on Carolina Road near the intersection of Brooke Ave. just outside of downtown Suffolk.
They say the victim, Haywood Madison, sustained life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a 2006 Toyota SUV. In their preliminary investigation, police say alcohol was a factor.
Madison is listed in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene after the accident and was not charged.
Police are still investigating the accident.
