UPDATE: Justesen's arraignment was continued to trial on October 11 at 10 a.m. in Newport News.

Today, the Navy sailor accused of stabbing a puppy to death is scheduled to appear in court.

24-year-old Joseph Justesen is charged with felony animal cruelty.

Newport News police say a 10-month-old golden retriever mix was found dead inside a home earlier this month.

According to the puppy's owner - Justesen is the roommate of a friend who had been watching the dog for her.

Police and Animal Control say it appeared the puppy had been stabbed several times.
