(CNN) — Former President George W. Bush is defending his successor’s frequent trips to the golf green. In an interview with the Golf Channel, Bush called golfing “an outlet.”

As first reported by the Washington Post, Bush, who quit playing early in his presidency to avoid appearing insensitive during wartime, said he disagreed with critics of President Barack Obama’s who say the president shouldn’t play. “I think he ought to play golf,” Bush said.

“I know what it’s like to be in the bubble. I know the pressures of the job, and to be able to get outside and play golf with some of your pals is important for the president. It does give you an outlet,” Bush said.

“It’s good for the President to be out playing golf”

Obama has been known to play golf frequently during his vacations, one of his preferred pastimes along with basketball.

The full interview with Bush will appear Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel’s “In Play with Jimmy Roberts.”
