Police investigate fatal shooting in Newport News

Newport News, Va. - Newport News police are investigating after they say a man was fatally shot on Ivy Avenue at around 8:15 p.m. on Monday night.

It happened on Monday, September 30, 2013. At 8:14 p.m., Newport News Communications received a call of a shooting in the 1500 block of Ivy Avenue.

Officers found 43-year-old Darron Gerard Spruill of the 1500 block of Ivy Avenue. Spruill was found suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso, police say.

Fire Department Medics arrived and pronounced Spruill deceased at 8:26 p.m.

Detectives canvassed the area and spoke to several family members. A number of people were identified as being in the area at the time of the shooting. Some indicated hearing three to five gunshots. According to police, no one has come forward as a witness.

There is no suspect information at this point in the investigation.

Detectives continue to interview multiple people at the scene.

This shooting and homicide investigation is ongoing.
