Newport News, Va. - A 15-year-old student was arrested Monday morning after police say he displayed a fake gun during class.

It happened at New Horizons Career and Technical Education Center located in the 13400 block of Woodside Lane.

At 8:50 a.m., the student entered a classroom and brandished what appeared to be a handgun while making threatening remarks, police say. The gun was later determined to be a toy.

The teen was arrested without incident by an off-duty police officer who was working security, police say.

The student faces a Class 6 felony charge of Brandishing a Firearm on School Property. He is being held in juvenile detention.
