Newport News, Va. – Three people were transported to the hospital Monday morning after a crash in Newport News on Jefferson Avenue and McLawhorne Drive.

Police say Michael Warren Tyndall, a 54-year-old man, was driving a 2007 GMC Sierra pick-up truck and he tried to make a left turn from the southbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue onto McLawhorne Drive.

They say he entered the path of a 2005 Mitsubishi Mirage that was going northbound on Jefferson Avenue. A 69-year-old man from Newport News was driving police say.

They say the driver of the Mirage had the green light and Tyndall had a yellow light when the collision happened. He was trapped inside of the truck but was rescued by the Newport News Fire Department. They say he was not injured.

Three people inside of the Mirage were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The truck driver was given a summons for failure to yield right of way.

Police say the roadway was reopened around 10:45 a.m. Monday morning.
