Norfolk, Va. – Today, the U.S. Fleet Forces Commander Admiral Bill Gortney, released a message stating that the Fleet will continue to provide ready forces during the government shutdown, but they will be limiting activities to those they say are “absolutely necessary.”

He referenced instructions provided in a memo from the Deputy Secretary of Defense.

Gortney told commanders to avoid or delay expenditures unless it is necessary.

“We must not operate any faster than safe,” said Gortney.

Gortney also told commanders to report any operations or events that are canceled or delayed and the impacts of those decisions.
