Norfolk school crossing guard accused of being drunk in public

Norfolk, Va. - Nestor Ortiz-Rivera, a 71-year-old Norfolk school crossing guard, was arrested after police say he was drunk in public.

Police say this happened in the 6600 block of Chesapeake Blvd. at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. They say an officer saw him on the ground by the road. The officer thought he may have needed medical assistance so he stopped to help. The officer then discovered that Rivera was intoxicated police say.

Rivera was taken into custody and then transported to the city jail. He has been charged with being drunk in public.

Police say at the time of the arrest, Rivera, who lives on Alexander Street, was on his way home.

Rivera has been relieved of his duties pending an investigation. A replacement crossing guard will be in the area on Wednesday.
