Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR) - A brand new fire station and an upgraded neighborhood park are coming to the Blackwater section of Virginia Beach.

The Blackwater Neighborhood Park closed for public use on Friday. This is so improvements can be made related to the renovation and replacement of Blackwater Fire and EMS Station 13.

With the renovations, a ballfield currently at the fire station will be moved to the park. The site of the old ballfield is where the new fire station will be constructed.

On Tuesday, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation crews removed old playground equipment and benches from the Blackwater Neighborhood Park.

The renovation project will include the new lighted ballfield, a brand new playground set as well as an expanded gravel parking lot.

The current ballfield at the park will also get lights and a new shelter with picnic table will be added.

Virginia Beach expects the newly renovated Blackwater Neighborhood Park to reopen February 28, 2014.

Construction on the new fire station is slated to start in January 2014 and is tentatively slated to be finished in late November 2014.

The new station will be nearly 11,500 square feet and will include day rooms, a kitchen and dining area, physical fitness area, living quarters and 5 bays for fire trucks and ambulances, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

The Blackwater Fire Station serves a rural part of Virginia Beach, as well as part of Currituck County in North Carolina under a mutual aid agreement.
