Newport News, Va. – Joseph Wayne Barkley, a 24-year-old Newport News father, has been charged after police say he injured a child.

Emergency crews responded to reports about an injured infant in the 300 block of 49th Street on November 13th at around 6:40 p.m. Officers spoke with the father who they say told them that the baby fell from the bed. He also said as he was taking him downstairs, the child kept passing out. Once he was outside, the child started to vomit.

The baby was taken to the hospital where he was treated before being transferred by ambulance to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk.

Officials started to investigate and Barkley was arrested and charged with malicious assault, felony child neglect and is now being held in the Newport News City Jail without bond.
