Newport News Police say they’re investigating a school bus crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon just before 3:00 p.m.
Police say they received the report at 2:56 p.m. that a school bus was involved in a crash on Menchville Road near Warwick Boulevard.
Preliminary information reveals that a 17-year-old driver struck a guide wire supporting a utility pole causing the wire the fall into the path of the bus.
The bus then struck the wire, which caused the pole to fall to the ground and the wire to fall across the bus.
Officers arrived to find the wire lying across Newport News Public School bus #73 from Jenkins Elementary.
Police did not know what type of wire was involved so officers had the 31 students and driver remain on the bus until Dominion Power could respond and remove the wire around 4:15 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Once the wire was removed, the students were transported onto a second bus that had arrived and they were taken home.
The 17-year-old driver has been issued a summons for reckless driving.
The crash remains under investigation.
Additional details will be posted as they become available.
