Man found dead in Newport News home after reportedly shooting at his friend

Newport News, Va. - Authorities are investigating after an shooting incident Wednesday night that left a man and his dog dead.

Police received calls about the situation in the 800 block of Paul Street at around 5:02 p.m. A woman reported to police that she was the caretaker of a man inside the home and he had fired shots from a gun at her.

Neighbors in the area say they heard four gunshots.

Police arrived and evacuated surrounding residents from their homes.

Police say the man would not open the door. At around 7:30 p.m., after warrants were obtained, police went inside of the home and found the man and his dog dead from gunshot wounds.

The man has been identified as 54-year-old Samuel Duane Spires.

The woman who called police who originally identified herself as Spires' caretaker was ultimately found out to be just an acquaintance of his. She said she falsely identified herself to police in fear that she had outstanding warrants. She, in fact, did not have any warrants but Tamara Lisa Albright, 48, was arrested and charged with identity theft and falsely identifying herself to law enforcement.

No other details have been released.
