Newport News, Va. – A Newport News woman has been charged after police say she robbed the Old Point National Bank at gunpoint on Thursday.

Taisha Nicole Peterson, 24, has been charged with robbery, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and entering the bank while armed. Police say they caught up to Peterson during a traffic stop. They say she was inside of the car with three kids and another woman at the time.

Calls came in about the incident at 4:48 p.m.  Police say it happened at the 11751 Jefferson Avenue location.

Police say this is the second robbery that has occurred at the bank in just over a week. In both cases, citizens provided valuable information to police that helped them capture the suspects.

Witnesses tell police that Peterson came into the bank with a gun demanding money from a teller.

The teller gave her the money and the suspect then left the bank.

A witness was able to get the license plate number off of the vehicle involved and dispatchers were also given a description of the car.

Officers who were in the area near the bank spotted the vehicle and performed a traffic stop near Jefferson Avenue and Middle Ground Blvd.

The officers detained the two women who were in the car and they say Peterson was positively identified.

Police say there were also three small kids in the car at the time. The women were taken in to be interviewed and the kids were placed in the care of relatives.

The other woman inside of the car with Peterson is not being charged. Investigators say she was not aware of what happened.
