USNS Spearhead deployment delayed due to weather

Posted

Deployment of the USNS Spearhead has been delayed because of the weather.

It will now head out first thing tomorrow.

The high speed vessel is the first in a new class.

The Joint Army Navy project can travel safely at 35 knots - that's about 40 miles per hour - and only needs a 22 person crew.

It will primarily be used as a transport ship, packing in as much as 600 tons of equipment.

That could be troops, vehicles or supplies.

The Spearhead will leave from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story on Thursday, headed for the Mediterranean until May.
