Closings: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On Monday, January 20, 2014, Newport News city offices will be closed in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday holiday.

Suffolk

In observance of the Lee-Jackson Day and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holidays, Suffolk City offices will be closed Friday, January 17 and Monday, January 20, 2014. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. The city observes all state-designated holidays. Lee-Jackson Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day are considered holidays for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and all state offices are closed on this day.

The Suffolk Tourism Visitor Center will remain open during the holiday weekend.

All Suffolk City Libraries will be closed Friday, January 17 through Monday, January 20, 2014.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Friday, January 17 through Monday, January 20, 2014.

Suffolk Joint Use Recreation Centers will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 17 following the closing of the afterschool programs. After 6 p.m., these centers will only be open for youth league athletic practices and games. On Monday, January 20, these centers will only be open for youth league athletic practices and games.

East Suffolk Recreation Center will be open Friday, January 17, from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for afterschool programs. East Suffolk Recreation Center will be closed on Monday, January 20.

Suffolk’s four major parks – Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett’s Creek will remain open Friday, January 17 and Monday, January 20; however, no park attendant will be on duty.

The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administrative Office will be closed January 17 through January 20 and will reopen Tuesday, January 21, 2014, for normal business hours.

The Suffolk Executive Airport Terminal will be closed on January 17 and January 20 but the Airport will remain open.

There will be no changes to the trash collection schedule for Friday, January 17. TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes on Friday, January 17. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. For more information on refuse collection, please call Public Works at 514-7630.

The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk will be open Friday, January 17 from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. or until the City of Suffolk finishes its’ refuse collection and 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Monday, January 20. The Regional Landfill will be open Friday, January 17 from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. and will be closed on Monday, January 20.

Norfolk

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2014 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The closures include libraries and the City’s recreation centers. All libraries will also be closed Sunday, January 19, 2014. Offices will reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Treasurer’s Office will be closed on Friday, January 17, 2014 in observance of Lee-Jackson Day and Monday, January 20, 2014 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. These offices will also reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

No garbage collection is scheduled for Monday and the Division of Waste Management’s administrative offices and E-waste and Household Hazardous Waste collection facility will be closed until Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Requests for bulk waste collection on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 must be made before 3 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014 by calling The Norfolk Cares IMPACT Center at (757) 441-5813, or by filling out a request online http://www.norfolk.gov/requesttracker.aspx.

Norfolk Residents can drop-off unwanted E-waste at the Division of Towing and Recovery located at 1188-A Lance Road.

Virginia Lottery

Virginia Lottery offices will be open on Lee-Jackson Day; closed on MLK Day.

All Virginia Lottery offices and customer service centers will be open on Lee-Jackson Day, Friday, January 17, 2014. The Lottery will remain open on the state holiday to give customers access to the Lottery’s prize zones and customer service centers across the Commonwealth.

Lottery offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Day, which is a federal holiday.
