Portsmouth, Va. – Public Works staff transitioned to a major effort to clear secondary roads overnight, officials tell NewsChannel 3.
The method that they are using is to plow the roads as much as possible, first, and then treat them with the salt and sand mixture.
Staff are continuing to monitor the bridges and primary roads and are ready to re-treat any areas as necessary. All primary roads continue to be passable.
Trash collection is canceled for Thursday, yet the city is requesting that residents place their trash and recycling carts at their curbs as soon as they can safely do so.
Waste Management personnel will collect trash and recycling as soon as neighborhood streets are free of icy conditions.
Residents should leave the containers out for collection until they have been emptied. Crews will make every effort to complete collections as soon as possible. Crews will work through the weekend if needed to complete all routes.
The City of Portsmouth continues to urge drivers to remain off the roads, if possible, and to exercise caution if they must drive.
