A man in Portsmouth was arrested and charged with assault on Monday morning after an incident involving a 16-year-old girl.
Portsmouth Police say they responded to the 2100 block of Peach Street around 6:56 a.m. in reference to a man following a 16-year-old girl who was walking to her bus stop.
According to the girl, she was at Nelson Street and Peach Street when the man behind her called out to her. She doesn’t remember what he said, but started walking faster. He started walking faster so she ran and he ran behind her.
She got home where her brother opened the door and let her in. As she got to her porch, the man stopped and ran in the opposite direction.
Officers got a description from her and found the man at Effingham Street and Lincoln Street. The girl positively identified him as the man following her.
The man was taken into custody and questioned by the Special Victims Unit. After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney, he was charged with assault, a misdemeanor.
