Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue are currently investigating a fatal vehicle accident that occurred Wednesday morning.

Police say they received a call from a driver at approximately 5:57 a.m. The driver told dispatch that his vehicle, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, had left the roadway and was submerged in a body of water, but he was unsure of his exact location.

Dispatch was able to ping his cell phone to determine his approximate location.

Emergency crews from the Suffolk Police Department, Virginia State Police, Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin Police Department and Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office responded to try to search for the accident location.

Police were able to find his name and home address through phone records and they were able to contact his family.  Once police determined his normal route to work, they started to look where any bodies of water intersected his normal route.

Between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Suffolk Police reported that they found what looked like a tire track and a piece of a vehicle in the 9400 block of South Quay Road.  Divers then went into the water and found the truck.

The male driver was found and confirmed deceased. He has been identified as 52-year-old Daniel Lee Post of Franklin.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

This is the second fatal accident involving a submerged vehicle in Suffolk this week. On Tuesday night, one woman died and three others were hospitalized when their vehicle plunged into a pond in the 6700 block of Burbage Landing Circle.
