Scam Alert: Dominion Power warns of fraudulent bill emails

Norfolk, Va. (WTKR) - Dominion Virginia Power says they've gotten several complaints recently from customers receiving fraudulent bill emails.

Bonita Harris, a spokeswoman for Dominion Virginia Power, shared one of the fraudulent emails with NewsChannel 3.

In it, the customer is told "Your latest Energy bill is now available to view online," and is asked to click on a link to make a payment.

"It wasn’t even a threat. They were fairly polite, they even said you could get energy saving tips, so they use techniques to trick people into thinking that they are Dominion asking for a payment – don’t fall for it," Harris told NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo.

One big clue that the email is fake is that it lacks pertinent information.

"If an email comes from us, it will clearly say Dominion, you will see our logo, it will say Dominion Virginia Power. It won’t say your energy or your power company or anything vague like that," Harris said.

If you receive an email and aren't sure of its validity, Harris says the best thing to do is not click on any links and instead call Dominion at 1-866-366-4357.

You can also report suspicious emails using this link or by forwarding the email to spam@uce.gov.
