Norfolk, Va. - Michael Spearman, a security guard at the District apartment complex near the Old Dominion University campus has been charged with raping a college student while he was on duty.

"I would have never thought that. That's like the people you expect to stop the rapist are the ones doing the raping," said Dana Velazquez, a freshman who lives in the District. "Especially where I'm living. That's crazy."

The university isn't saying where inside the complex the rape happened.

Spearman worked for United American Security.

The company nor the district where he worked as a guard would make any comment to NewsChannel 3 about the charges against the 29-year-old.

The rape happened early Saturday morning around 1:30.

Most of the students who live in the complex only found out after NewsChannel 3 told them about it.

"You know rape is a big deal," said Sunita Dhir, a junior who lives in the complex. "So I'm like, where's my email? Where's my letter in the door saying you know this happened, so close to where I live?"
