Convicted over 14 years ago for the brutal beating and sexual assault of a New York City Central Park jogger, five men are now receiving long overdue justice in the financial sum of $40 million. The men became known as the Central Park Five.
Collectively the men spent nearly 40 years in prison before being released. In 2002, DNA results concluded the crime was committed by one man, Matias Reyes, a convicted rapist and murderer. A civil rights lawsuit was filed against the police department but administration fought the suit saying prosecutors acted in good faith.
The $40 million settlement roughly figures into $1 million for every year each plaintiff spent in prison.
