A man was rescued from the water at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Tuesday night.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department says a call came in at 8:58 p.m. of a possible drowning near 31st Street.

A person on the beach says a white male was drifting in the water and yelling for help. Other people on the beach attempted to reach the man but could not.

Officers arrived on scene and used a life saving device to reach the man. A helicopter was also used to provide light.

Officers made contact with the man at 9:11 p.m. and he was brought back to shore.

He refused transport to the hospital, against medical advice, saying he was okay.
