Newport News Police identify victim in fatal pedestrian vs vehicle accident

Newport News, Va- Newport News Police have identified the victim in a fatal accident that occurred early Saturday morning.

Police say they received a call about a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident in the area of 12978 Jefferson Ave around 2:24 a.m.  Once on scene, officers located an adult male lying on Jefferson Ave with life threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old David Barraza Palacio. He was intoxicated at the time.

Police say that a Ford Explorer driven by a 41 year old Newport News woman was traveling Northbound on Jefferson Ave. when she struck an Palacio, who was walking Southbound in the middle of Jefferson Ave.

According to police, this stretch of the road has poor lighting conditions.

The crash is being investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Team.

No charges are pending for the 41-year-old driver.
