Virginia Beach, Va. - A 48-year-old Virginia Beach man is behind bars after police say he tried to abduct an infant at gunpoint this morning.
Police say this happened at 9:52 a.m. in the 2200 block of Locksley Arch.
Bryan R. Lowe approached someone and started a conversation, police say. Lowe then pulled out a gun and threatened to take the baby who was in the back seat of a vehicle at the time.
Amber Garofalo, who lives across the street, tells NewsChannel 3 she saw the red Ford truck police say Lowe was driving but thought nothing of it until officer showed up.
"It's very scary because we have kids in our neighborhood and a playground over here and just to think that someone right across the way from me, something like this would happen is intimidating," she says. "The guy looked very normal and that's the most intimidating part about it. That car, that everything didn't look like something to be afraid of."
The victim was able to get away to call 911 and gave dispatchers a description of the suspect. Neighbors say the father was able to run inside his home with his son, then use a neighbors phone to call for help.
"The fact that his dad was able to act so quickly and go inside and remove his son out of danger and then come out, lock himself it was amazing," Garofalo says.
An officer spotted the truck and stopped it at Princess Anne Road and General Booth Blvd.
Lowe has been charged with attempted abduction and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is now being held in the Virginia Beach City Jail without bond.
