A 25-year-old mother was arrested early Friday morning in Newport News after her five-year-old son was found wandering alone in the street.
Newport News Police say they were called to the area of River Road and North Avenue around 2:00 a.m. after a citizen had found the boy in the street.
The boy was fully-clothed and there were no reports that he was harmed or injured.
Officers took custody of the boy and searched the neighborhood for an hour and a half before the child’s mother was found inside a residence in the 9500 block of River Road.
The mother, identified as 25-year-old Kristy McClemmy, and her son, are currently homeless and were living in a detached garage at the residence.
McClemmy was arrested and taken to the Newport News Magistrate’s Officer where a warrant for Child Neglect was obtained. She was then taken to the Newport News City Jail where she is being held without bond.
The boy was turned over to Child Protective Services.
